The Helmet mounted sights are only available on Russian aircraft like the Su-27, Su-33, & Mig 29 of all variants in this game. The helmet mounted sight should be used at short or medium ranges. The locks you get with it are visual locks, all you have to do is move your head around spot the enemy, and get a lock when the enemy is in your cross hairs.

The helmet mounted sight has a field of view of 90 degrees from the center of the view. In other words, 45 degrees to the left, and 45 degrees to the right. If you go beyond 45 degrees to the right or left than you cannot get a lock, because it is beyond the sight radius of your weapons+tracking.

The helmet mounted mode gives you a much better chance of getting quick locks at close ranges, because what you see can be locked. In air combat, the person who gets the first lock is always the winner. The helmet mounted sight is very much like the bore sight mount, but you don't have to move the entire aircraft to do it. This gives you a distinct advantage to a foe who doesn't have it. When you are dog fighting, you always have to look around to see where your enemy is. Your radar cannot track targets that are behind you, above you, or at right angles from the front of your aircraft. When you spot an enemy that is to the far right of you, you can simply bank to the right a little, and get a lock quickly. This is beauty of this system.
