Fallout 4 VR - VR Gameplay HTC Vive
Fallout 4 VR was definitely a breath of fresh air after playing Doom VFR. While not perfect, it does a lot more right than Doom VFR or Skyrim VR did.
The ugly:
Some things are ugly. Rewatching the recorded footage I realized just how bad it looks compared to other iterations of the game. The graphics definitely too a significant hit. If you can't stand some jaggies in your gameplay, FO4VR is going to make you cry.
I'll be tweaking settings between sessions to see if I can make it look better but looking at the lack of detail on the Deathclaw while editing really made the issue stand out to me.
EDIT: Strike that. THERE ARE NO GRAPHICS SETTINGS! Seriously? WTF? The best I've managed to come up with, thanks to StingingRumble is to turn on DPI override compatibility settings. http://steamcommunity.com/app/611660/discussions/0/1500126447405587342/
There is no two handed grip for weapons. This is in line with the Skyrim VR failure and I'd really like to see them rectify this ASAP. Two handed items are a thing Bethesda!
No manual reload though I can accept this with the way the game works and the fact it's a port. FO5VR I'll be less forgiving.
The Good:
The Fallout 4 VR devs embraced motion controls and made things feel more natural than the other two games. Lifting my arm to view the PiP Boy and manipulating the dials with the track pad felt intuitive and natural. Some of the selection button choices on the other hand may take some getting used to.
Bossing your companion around seems like it's going to be much easier in VR. Simply point and click. It's a feature I never really used in the flat version that I may use more in VR just because of its accessibility.
Quick loot vs opening up a loot window. I love that we have the option and it's simple to chose between the two.
Locomotion options and plenty of other VR specific options. If only Doom VFR had had these options... (Why didn't it?)
Overall, it's just fun. The first hour or so of the game has been enjoyable enough to ignore the flaws. That may be the rose colored glasses we all wear in a new relationship but hey, I'm getting mine...
FO4VR might not be for everyone if you're put off by the downgraded graphics and the price tag. Personally, I think a RPG like Fallout 4 is just what we need to prove that we can handle VR for extended periods of time.
Now I have a pretty painful decision. Do I play Fallout or Skyrim in my off time?
