Fallout 76 - First Impressions #4 - Multiplayer & Public Events
Hey Everyone, this is Thyworm with some initial thought on Bethesda's latest masterpiece. Or, is it?
We're continuing the Fallout76 first impressions series with the next topic: Multiplayer and Public Events
I've been mainly playing Fallout76 solo. In fact, other players have ruined the immersion somewhat for me. I'm very well aware that this is a multiplayer game and maybe should be played as such, but I don't think as of now, that the multiplayer part is implemented very well. I'll try to explain what I mean.
First of all, there aren't any push to talk microphone settings. By default, your mic is live, which is wrong on so many levels, but lets keep it at the immersion part. During character creation, I already heard a bunch of guys talking Russian. That's literally the first moment i'm starting this game. Completely breaks the whole feel of starting a new Fallout game. Imagine what will happen at launch. It'll be an absolute mess, with everyone's mic on. Bethesda promised to fix this, by the way, but didn't specify when exactly.
There's no chat functionality. The lack of chat means that multiplayer interactions that way aren't really promoted and to me it is just so weird that they didn't implement it. When you look at things like this, it's so obvious that Fallout76 was designed for consoles and then ported to PC without thinking about the differences between PCs and consoles. Give us our regular ways to communicate please, so i can whisper someone, send a message and find people to play with, without having to shout in my mic in an open world.
As a result, because I dont'want my mic on for everyone to hear, and I can't contact them up front either, I'm not teaming up with many people really. Instead, I'm just exploring the area's and when then someone else comes in and starts shooting up teh place, I get a little annoyed.
Also, I don't really like PvP.
Now, I get what you guys are about to say, like: then why did you byu it? Well, Like I said before, I really enjoy the fallout experience. And the multiplayer issues to me aren't that severe or dealbreaking. But they might be to you, which is why i'm telling this. I personally had a ton of fun with this game. Just by myself. And its perfectly possible to do so, just by wary of what I described earlier.
I'm sure that once I'm getting clsoer towards the end game and once I've found a few people to play with, I will start to appreciate the multiplayer aspects a lot more. I am already looking forward to have actual coop in dungeons and caves, instead of someone rushing in and killing everyone in front of me.
On to the Public Events. This is something that Bethesda did really well I feel. These are events where you can team up, or just do them solo. They're scripted adventures with a timer, and once the timer runs out or you've done the appropriate steps in the event, you'll complete the mission and get a reward plus a bunch of XP.
The Public event are fun to do, very rewarding and provide a nice diversion from leveling and questing. They trigger automatically once you enter a certain area. You can also see them on the map and then fast travel towards them, for the price of a few caps. There, you're free to join the other players through the clunky invite system and protect Appalachia from all kinds of threats.
