This was the third and final title I decided before I even started this playthrough. I figured it was a fitting tribute to a game that Squaresoft never really respected and effectively assassinated during the sixth generation with a lukewarm sequel. Yes, believe or not, there was a time when Square would release games without "Final", "Fantasy", "Dragon", "Quest", "Kingdom" and "Hearts" in the title. When the "typical" Square Enix game was supplemented with atypical Square games. When Square and Enix and Eidos and Taito were all responsible for completely different offerings, as opposed to the bland gruel their fanbase constantly bellows out for, grumbling as it begins pouring in their collective mouths but sucking it down with all the self-control of drug addicts in withdrawal.
I'm actually kind of sad at how easily I managed to finish this up, after going through all that turmoil. Also the fact that I had more trouble fighting a standard recurring enemy than any of the remaining bosses in the game. That and the fact that I just sort of muddled through the final boss (well, the real final boss - not the cutscene boss) and won on my first try was also kind of disappointing. I wasn't even overleveled or had the best gear or anything.
I mention this in the stream itself, but I'd have to give this game a 6/10 overall. This may seem like a high score for a game that I've literally bellyached about the entire time I was playing it, but the game is fully functional with no real game-breaking glitches, so in good conscience, I'd have to give it a 6 - it's fully functional, but it's still crap. I guess if you want a better metaphor, try to think of my scale like grades in school: 90 and up is an A, 89-80 is a B, 70s are a C, 60 to 69 is in the Ds. The game works, but it's shit. I'd honestly consider 60 a "high F" by my own marks and that's exactly where Final Fantasy 7 lies with me. It's an incredibly overrated game that aged poorly especially when compared to older JRPGs I've streamed in the past. Hell, I hated Super Mario RPG, but even I have to admit it was much better than this one. Considering it was made by Square, I don't really see the excuse.
