Fan Expo 2012 - Toronto
Fan Expo 2012 - An inside look at
Known as the "Comic Con" of Canada, Fan Expo began as a Canadian National Comic Book Expo in 1995. Thanks to its growing popularity, the convention has since transformed and expanded from one niche genre to an extremely diverse show connecting over 80,000 comic book, sci-fi, fantasy, movie, television and entertainment fans alike. This past weekend (August 23 - 26), over 700 exhibitors set up at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre and fans had the opportunity to dress up as their favourite characters while visiting displays and booths of all kinds -- everything from science fiction and horror, to anime to gaming. There were also plenty of chances to catch sights of famous faces, even get autographs or take pictures with celebrities such as Alan Tudyk, Lou Ferrigno (famous for playing The Hulk), John Rhys-Davies, Christopher Lloyd, Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager), Jamie Bamber and, of course, Stan Lee.
Some of the other highlights from this year's event included an art exhibition of Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, a display of the Back to the Future time machine and a special screening of CTV's new series Arrow. One of the definite highlights of the weekend was a question-and-answer session with Stan Lee, where he talked about the creation of some of comic books' most legendary characters, such as Spider-Man and Thor.
