Fatal Frame! Face Your Fears - Halloween Retro 2023 (Part 1 of 2)
2I get Fatal Frame recommended to me every single Halloween, so I'm finally playing it. I have to say it's not what I expected, lol. You explore a creepy mansion in Japan, looking for your brother and uncovering the story of why everything is so damn haunted. The twist is that your only weapon is a camera. This was a pretty clever idea; it forces you to face ghosts head-on and be up close and personal. The interesting mix of 3rd-person and 1st-person combat and a basic upgrade system set this game apart from the usual survival horror. There are a lot of cutscenes and plenty of left-behind journals to read to help with the story. I don't really have much to criticize except a small difficulty spike near the end that discourages you from exploring. There's also a lot of backtracking since the entire game takes place in the same house, but enough changes in each chapter that it didn't bother me. I had a lot of fun with this one, and I'll definitely be checking out more of the series in the future. This is part 1 of our playthrough.
