"Fatal Fury" is a 1991 head-to-head fighting game produced by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade and home platforms known in Japan as "Gar Densetsu: Shukumei no Tatakai (, "Hungry Wolf Legend")Fighting game Fatal Fury was developed by SNK for the Neo Geo system and the first in their Fatal Fury series. It featured the legendary "King of Fighters" tournament, which was the inspiration for the subsequent The King of Fighters titles.

Former Capcom employee Takashi Nishiyama was responsible for designing the game (1987). The Bogard siblings Terry and Andy, their friend Joe Higashi, and their enemy Geese Howard all make their first appearance in this game..

Terry and Andy, his younger brother, were orphans in 1981 and were reared by the streets on their own. He adopted them and they ended up living in Southtown when Jeff Bogard took them in. Terry was 10 years old when Geese Howard shot and killed their adoptive father. The brothers vowed to spend a decade honing their martial arts skills before attempting to revenge their father, knowing full well that they would need more time to prepare for their confrontation with Geese. Andy went to Japan to learn the Shiranui-ry Ninjutsu (Shiranui Style Ninja Technique) and a kind of empty-handed combat called Koppken in order to distinguish himself from his older brother. Tung Fu Rue is the shih-fu of both the disciplines of Hakkyokuseiken and Bajiquan, and he taught Terry Hakkyokuseiken and Bajiquan combat techniques he had received from his father. Terry also learnt other martial arts talents from the South Town street fighters.

The "King of Fighters" competition was staged by mafia leader Geese Howard a decade later. Reuniting with Terry is the main reason Andy comes to South Town. Joe Higashi, a Japanese Muay Thai champion from Thailand, introduces the Bogard brothers to the K.O.F. competition sponsored by Geese after they visit Jeff's grave. Avenging their father's death is Andy's motivation for participating in the tournament. However, Andy was defeated early on by Billy Kane, the right-hand man of Geeses, while Joe Higashi was defeated by Geese's muscle-bound henchman Raiden, who had been passed by his fierce rival Hwa Jai. Having beaten all seven of his opponents, including his former guru, Tung Fu Rue, Terry was about to celebrate his win when he was kidnapped by two thugs and taken to Geese's Tower, where he would face the crime leader, Geese. Although Geese was Terry's most formidable foe, the latter won by kicking Geese out of his tower, sending the latter plummeting to his death. Andy returned to Japan to resume his training after Terry's victory in the competition left him with a mixed feeling of closure.
