Fateful Crash on a Strange Alien World - Returnal pt.1 (2023-03-05)
It took a couple of years but the PC version of Returnal has arrived and I can finally dive in. I've had no doubts about the game being amazing - both with the small amount of footage I had seen and knowing Housemarque's previous endeavors, I know it's going to be good.
After a stuttery, desynced intro sequence, I've made a confused but buttery smooth entrance onto Atropos, a planet filled almost entirely with tentacle monsters! After dusting myself off, finding a weapon alongside a relatively grim discovery, I set out to investigate the "White Shadow" broadcast.
Out of curiosity and wanting back buttons for Elden Ring and other games, I bought a DualSense Edge controller and Returnal is the first game I've tried it with. The ridiculously smooth analog sticks on that controller along with Returnal's generous auto aim quickly assuaged my fears that the game might be obnoxious to play with controller. This also marks my first experience with the Adaptive Triggers (the game has native PS5 controller support on PC). It took some time to get used to the extra click between aiming and toggling alt-fire, but it feels really good.
