This game runs on the LithTech Jupiter EX engine, the same as FEAR, FEAR 2 and both Condemned games. Also the same as *ten other games* published by City Interactive released over the course of three years. They really must have wanted to get their money's worth.

The French Foreign Legion is in fact part of the French Army. It was created back in 1831 for foreign nationals who wanted to serve in the French military, but that's the really simple explanation. See, at the time there were a lot of immigrants entering France, some of whom were veterans of the Napoleonic Wars, and having a bunch of people with military training and no jobs hanging around is a really bad idea (see: the first chapter of Final Fantasy Tactics). At the same time, France was attempting to establish a colony in Algeria, but the French Army proper disliked being posted there. The current French government had a policy at the time of removing potential dissidents from France, so why not send all these foreign fighters in the brand-new Legion to Algeria and kill two birds with one stone?

That's the super-abridged version, at least. A little more happened in the 180 years between then and now, so.

Its reputation for being an elite unit isn't undeserved, considering how brutal and psychologically demanding the training is. When you've got about 7,700 soldiers from 140 countries (only a quarter of them are French) that need to work as a team, you need some heavy esprit de corps. On the plus side, if you get wounded fighting for France you can apply for French citizenship under a provision known as "Français par le sang versé," or "French by spilled blood." By the end of this I'm gonna be THE FRENCHEST PERSON EVER.
