Feral Rod & Smoker in Corrigin - Aussie Garage Interviews
Okay, Aussie Garage has left Kulin and we heading to Corrigin for our last Interview before heading home to Perth. We are following Dan to the interview and sport this awesome HG Holden Ute on the Corrigin Liberty Service Station roof, which is very cool. However, it does make think with the prices of this Classic Cars, it should come down for restoration but like I said it looks cool.
Interview with Steve about his Rat Rod.
It’s a 1939 Oldsmobile Pick Up Ute and he found it in a mate’s paddock in Corrigin, which cost he two cartoons of beer. What a bargain. When he saw the Oldsmobile Pick Ute, it had a tree growing out the door, no floor and panels stowed in places. Its good being old steel that the panel could be hammered back into place. The Ute had most of the glass panel for the front and rear of the car and the door still opened to point but needed some work.
Steve and his mates made the chassis from two truck chassis, weld it together and the boxed for strength where needed. They put a HT front end on the Pickup, disc brakes, 4 link gearbox and Valiant diff. They also put in a 318 Valiant engine into the engine bay and they to modify this by cutting the firewall by 100mm to make room for the running gear.
They built this Oldsmobile Pick Up Ute for a pub vehicle to match their business requirements of Feral Dudes Smokers BBQ’s. These smokers are awesome by the way, and you will see later. Steve reckons any excuse to go to the pub for fun and feed.
It took 3 to 4 months to build the Rat Rod with his mates and a couple of months to make sure to drove right, so you did not crap yourself as you were going down the road. The way the Pickup looks now is the same as they got it out of the paddock, no paint, just linseed oil and mineral turbine only. One of their mates painted the Sign of their business on the doors for advertising for them.
Steve said the good thing about building a Rat Rod is there is no wrong way of doing it. Your build it with the parts your have, they way or style you like, and you can do as much or as little as possible and it will still look cool. They have used beer kegs for the fuel tanks, number plates for the floor, lever for the gears and rabbit trap for the brake pedal. The have cut down racing seat for a bit of comfort, gate latches for the doors and so many other things, its not funny. However, they bleed in for a very cool pick-up Ute.
Steve said they still have to change the standard distributor for an Ice Ignition for better performance on the 318 Valiant Engine, the gauge on the Original Oldsmobile they did not want to change, so they added the new gauge up on the roof lining out of the way. They have a massive 3inch exhaust system with a awesome bark sound to it.
Custom F150 Build.
They have got a truck Chassis that they modified with Lower suspension from a BA Falcon and have lower the engine placement and mounts for a massive engine and they will BA gear for the rest of the chassis as well. They will have a Ford 9” Differential with disc brakes all round. They will need the F150 Cab and Tray to the Custom Truck frame to add a massive blown engine into the F150.
They want the engine placement to be as low as possible so the massive blown engine will fit under the bonnet, so no one knows its there.
Feral Dudes Smoker BBQ’s
We know this is not a car, but we had to show you these beasts of a smoker that these guys make for local pubs around the country areas. They made this one from old water pipe that keep of the Kalgoorlie from 1890 – 1903 water line that they salvaged 60kms from Southern Cross. This smoker is for the Corrigin Hotels that was established in 1915 and parts for this smoker are from everywhere including the handle from the rabbit proof fence.
Conclusion
Thank you, Steve, for showing us your Rat Rod, Custom F150 project and these wicked Smoker BBQ’s. We will be back next year for a bigger and better time for a party.
Aussie Garage would like to say thank you to Dan for arranging the Interviews in Kulin and Corrigin for Aussie Garage.
