FFT PSP - Onion Knight SCC Part 1: Luso (Zeklaus Desert)
A challenge I started a long while ago and never finished. Maybe uploading the videos I have of it will motivate me to go back and finish it. As you might recognise, I recorded this in the same way I recorded my unfinished Persona 3 Portable challenge way back, with the lag and all the other consequences of recording on an inferior PSP model on an ancient computer. I'm not particularly sure if getting a new PC will lead to better video quality with regards to recording PSP footage.
That said, I never deleted the videos I had of this because I found the concept interesting (just took me a while to start sharing them, but I'll be sure to put up all the stuff I have of it in the nearest future). It's only class used throughout and an interesting class it is - Onion Knights have great base stats, can wield any weapon you are able to get for them, but have no abilities and never level up - since the chapter 1 level cap for challenges is lv. 20, I trained them up to lv. 20 as Mimes (training as OKs is unbelievably frustrating since they don't level up naturally) and then kept them in these classes for the rest of the challenge.
I started the challenge with the Onion Knight job levelled to the maximum level of 8. It would've definitely been a different experience with base job level OKs, but it wouldn't be in my interest to try one tbqh (I even found an Oracle SSCC way too tedious, for crying out loud).
Early on, the challenge was super easy, just based on the HP my characters had alone - nobody could kill them and they could wear out an entire enemy party in the most difficult storyline mission without employing any advanced tactics - they had so much stamina.
While progressing the story and getting to chapters 2 and 3 increased the difficulty, my OKs got brand new equipment which was often very potent, and I had infinite flexibility with weapon and gear setups and high PA/MA bases (for lv. 20 anyway).
This is the first map I recorded, and it's unique for the fact that it's a PSP exclusive, not existing in any shape in the original version of FFT. FFTA2's Luso makes a cameo appearance and, much like Balthier later on, he's a playable character. His unique class, Game Hunter, is essentially Ramza's UberSquire, except he has access to Scream before chapter 4 actually begins, meaning you can easily turn him into a 99 Brave Martial Arts Ninja before Ramza can be turned into one himself.
We're firing Luso after we get access to his equipment anyway, but what we really care about is his innate Poach skill. He happens to join as a guest in a map full of Behemoth enemies, and the King Behemoth ones can be poached for Artemis (Ultimus) Bow, which is obviously a kickass weapon to have at this point. I make sure to reset until Luso poaches at least one of them for the bow, providing me with non-elemental ranged damage for maps to come.
The map could get hard easily if I didn't have the means to snipe enemies from afar, which three of my units excel at. I have Ramza with a Lightning Bow and a 108 Gems (called something else in this version iirc), another bowman and a gun wielder (who sometimes has to move in spite of 8-panel gun range anyway, because some enemies can't be reached). I also have one mean puncher with high-ish Brave and massive PA stack gear, and my sole female Onion Knight is a Healing Staff wielder, ensuring the sole source of healing available to me in this map. Needless to say, they rout the map with ease, though the puncher gets in trouble because of monsters' innate counter and my only healer dies to an instakill proc (these are p dangerous).
I do my best to feed Luso some kills, namely the King Behemoth ones, as the Artemis Bow is too good to be skipped. The Cherche accessory isn't terribly useful as an alternative and poaching a Dark Behemoth can give us a Stone Gun - this weapon may be extremely powerful, but without a Chemist to throw a Soft on the wielder, this only gives an essentially 'dead' character for battles to come.
I show my full party setup at the end of the video. The reason why I have the non-Onion Knight units in my party, not fired, is because I'm looking forward to obtaining the incredibly overpowered Tynar Rouge accessory in the final chapter, as it turns any Onion Knight into a merciless attacker and tank (the male ones can equip it too).
Oh, and the Icebrand Luso comes with is sure to be handy too (108 Gems greatly bolsters the damage, and Luso brings it much earlier than you would get it in PSX FFT). His other equipment has its uses too.
