FFVI - NENMG Part XIV: Goddess
Epic ending, much?
The third and last goddess of the warring triad, and the hardest, I believe. I fought her so many times in a row that I think I got the closest to mastering the timing of opening and closing the menu. One thing I'm not happy about is that when I'm playing the SNES version switching between characters' menus sends you to the character whose turn just came. Maybe I just fail to notice an option that changes this in the config, but in the GBA version it seems to be the exact opposite, i.e. you have to switch with everyone in the party until you can act with the person you want. In a battle where we at a glaring disadvantage, this nuance is quite annoying.
Goddess is fought with easily the worst party of four we've brought to the final dungeon. Edgar's Noiseblaster makes it the most effective to fight random encounters in the tower but against a boss as sinister as this the common methods do not work. The party lacks a good way of healing (something a lot more essential here than in the other two Warring Triad battles), buffing spells and to a lesser extent good offence (Sabin's not that bad at all).
The only good thing here is that I did bring some Megalixirs, without which the boss might've well been impossible, and the two parties stand separately from each other, meaning that a MT Thundaga or Flash Rain cannot make this a game over as long as somebody is alive on the other side.
So yes, Thundaga kills whomever it hits, Flash Rain hurts two people badly ,and she counters with Thundara, forcing us to waste time reviving Sabin. Of greater danger is Quasar: unblockable and targeting all four. In this video, I somehow use a Megalixir exactly before it is used. Instinct? Luck?
Then there are all those annoying status effects. If Sabin gets charmed, we might as well restart. Not that we don't restart enough anyway. Let's say, Sabin gets countered and dies and the boss follows this with an MT Thundaga the other way. Terra is alone and obviously cannot hope to continue the battle: the boss is in permanent Haste status.
What made this attempt successfully, in addition to being more or less precise with opening the Item menu, was that Sabin was barely (if at all?) countered.
Now, to explain why Sabin's doing all the attacking most of the battle... When hit 8 times, Goddess uses Overcast. When killed, characters turn to zombies and create a huge queue by pummeling the boss with physical attacks. Forget about the doom count: you normally die here before you actually see the numbers reduced to zero. I found no other alternative to sticking with Bum Rush and Bum Rush only so that when Overcast is used the boss is as close to dying as possible.
And yeah, the last minute of the video is too scary.
