Things get hectic for Zack, as SOLDIER operatives try to corner and detain Professor Hollander, who is supplying Genesis with the tech and resources to create his army of clones. Just when Zack is sure he finally has Hollander trapped, Angeal descends to reveal he is now acting against ShinRa.

Zack then falls from a great height, landing in Aerith's church in the slums. The two immediately hit it off, and Zack later returns to help her build a flower cart.

After returning to HQ, Zack speaks to Hojo, only for them to be interrupted by the arrival of Genesis, who reveals his body is degrading at a cellular level due to ShinRa's experiments on him. Reversing his affliction then becomes his primary goal, alongside trying to uncover the truth behind "the gift of the Goddess", as spoken of in LOVELESS.
