FFX - Dark Bahamut at Low-ish level, Minimal Luck, No Aeons, Mix, Ribbon, or Clear Spheres
The Dark Aeons are regarded as requiring a ton of Sphere Grid work, specifically farming Luck and Fortune Spheres from Greater Sphere and Earth Eater respectively, which is a really annoying farm cycle. In this series I'm going to prove these guys are extremely over-hyped. With simple strategies and basic farms you can burn through them easily. Some of the fights will be longer, but I've saved at least as much time from traditional farms. I won't be using Mix or Aeons, but both of those make these fights easier. I'm still considering this a continuation of my "low-ish level" run, because none of my characters have completed the Sphere Grid, but I know some might not agree with that assessment.
A lot of people consider this guy to be the hardest of the Dark Aeons, and I've even seen him referred to as the hardest fight in the game, which makes him by far the most over-hyped enemy.
So what does Dark Bahamut have going on? Let's cover the basics. First, he only has a physical attack as a normal, he will literally never do anything else on his turn unless his Overdrive is full. The physical attack is of course the easiest move in the game to manipulate, so this is great. He has 4 million HP, so about the same as Neslug. This puts him in the game's top 5 for HP, but nothing that you'd freak out over if you've beaten Nemesis. His Overdrive is a guaranteed full-party wipe, but that's typical of any of the fights we've done up to this point, so nothing to stress about there. In fact, Dark Bahamut's Overdrive bar fills extremely slowly, making this actually less of a threat than it's been in previous battles.
Dark Bahamut really only has one trick going for him, which is powerful enough to have earned him his reputation. Every five times he's targeted, he'll use Impulse. This move Petrifies and Shatters, adds Full Break, Slow, and does Delay Buster to all three characters. If you don't have nearly max defense, it will deal over 10k damage, meaning it will kill all three characters under normal conditions. Most of the difficulties in winning this battle come from the complications in getting your party to survive this move. I say this is silly. Just accept your demise Treat Impulse the same as you would another Overdrive and tank through with Auto-Life and you'll find this battle is one of the easier Dark Aeons.
First you'll have to counter the Petrify/Shatter effect with Stoneproof, as we did with Dark Sandy. Next I like to raise Wakka's Strength to 255. This part is optional, but without it the next three Dark Aeons are each going to take a substantial amount of time, so it's worth the investment now. I demonstrate the process for this at the beginning of the video, similar to the process I used to get Agility over 170. I use the area around Full-Life this time, as there's a nice chunk of empty grid nodes there.
This gets Wakka up to doing about 250,000 damage per Attack Reels. Now this might not seem amazing against an enemy with 4,000,000 HP, but keep in mind the fact that you're doing 2.5x the damage of Quick Hit means you're going to see only 40% as many uses of Impulse. It will take around 16-17 uses of Attack Reels to win, maybe as many as 19-20 if you mess up, which means you'll only see Impulse 3 times. You also have full control over when to land the fifth hit, meaning you can ensure it only happens when all three characters have Auto-Life.
You'll also see 2-3 Mega Flares. I mess up two of my Attack Reels and kill him just as his third Overdrive charges. This is really a trivial amount of multi-target attacks to deal with in the grand scheme of things. With a Sentinel character absorbing Bahamut's physical attacks and another free to toss out Auto-Life with One MP Cost, you're in complete control the whole way. Even if you don't boost Wakka's Strength this fight is nothing compared to Nemesis, so don't fear him.
