61997 would see the FIFA series make it's first appearance on the recently released Nintendo 64 with FIFA Soccer 64, developed by Extended Play Productions FIFA Soccer 64 would release in the US and across Europe.
1997 would also mark the first entry in the FIFA series to focus on a specific tournament, in the case of this release the qualification for a specific tournament in Road to World Cup 98. While the game was focussed on World Cup qualifying, like previous entries domestic football was also heavily featured in this release, with leagues from 11 nations included.
