Alongside World Up 98 releasing in 1998 the next main-line entry in the FIFA series would also release, with FIFA 99 releasing for Windows, PlayStation and Nintendo 64. This latest entry in the series would feature 45 national teams as well as 250 domestic league teams across 12 leagues. FIFA 99 was the first in the series to introduce basic goalkeeper control.

FIFA 2000 would follow this in the continued yearly cycle for the series however would drop a release on the Nintendo 64 with releases for the PlayStation Windows as well as a Game Boy Color version of the game, this was the final entry in the series that console wise was exclusive to the fifth generation.
