Final Fantasy 1: going beyond the limits
https://www.patreon.com/ulillillia --- Ever wonder what happens if you reset character level and exp to how they are at the start of the game and relevel? How about seeing what happens when going far beyond the normal limits of the game, since the memory space allows for significantly higher values?
I've played FF1 through about 10 times as of the time I posted this video, including doing a monk-only challenge without any cheats or the like, on normal difficulty on top of that. Thus, I know the game very well. But, I've always wondered, how extreme can the game really potentially go?
This video has several stages. The first shows the best and fastest way to level up in the game - Citadel of Trials right near the end point throne where you only ever get dragon zombies for enemies. They are relatively weak for a high exp enemy, fast and easy to get, relatively short to get to, and overall quite decent. (Alternatives include aquos in Sunken Shrine's second B2 floor (a bit deeper in then the first case seen), floor B4 of Temple of Chaos, and, to a lesser extent, floor B4 of Mount Gulg for a never-ending supply of single fire lizards.)
Once I finish up reaching level 99, which barely takes 4 minutes at 4.5x time, from level 97, I show how you can push damage to the absolute maximum. The best place to do it though is actually Sunken Shrine because the common enemies there have lower defense. You need the giant's helm (found in the second floor B2 of Sunken Shrine), and 3 other usable items. White cape is recommended a lot because it basically makes you immune to enemy physical attacks with enough uses (high accuracy enemies aside). Healing staff is found in the Citadel of Trials on the way to Dragon Zombie, in an obvious chest in the corner where nightmare encounters are forced upon. A pair of healing helms are found during Mirage Tower and Flying Fortress. You need to use giant's gloves a total of 26 times to get the maximum bonus of 255 ATK and 255 ACC as each use is 16 ATK and 10 ACC. I always add an extra one in just in case I miscount. With haste added in, from a red or black mage/wizard, on a level 99 monk/master (requires easy difficulty), you can deal 72 hits for an absolute maximum of 50,400 damage per hit. That's the best possible under normal means.
But, what happens if you reset level and experience to how it is at the game start once you reach max level and gain it all back again? Answer: the 5 main stats on the left continue climbing, HP is preserved, and the stats on the right column are unchanged except for the monk/master where only ATK and DEF are changed, since they are hard-set based solely on level. ATK = LV×2; DEF = LV. At first, the monks are basically useless, hardly doing any damage, but they make a ton of hits due to the high ACC. HitCount = (ACC÷32+1)×MonkMaster. ACC is the ACC stat, MonkMaster is 2 if a monk or master is involved that doesn't have equipment, 1 for any other setup.
Next... can ACC go above 999? Answer: yes! I don't know what the limit is, but it has to be a 16-bit value so potentially up to 65,535 is the maximum.
Now, what happens if I raise level beyond the limit? Like, how high can that go? Answer: 255 is the highest possible. It is an unsigned 8-bit value.
Other things I could've done: what happens if I set ATK to something like 30,000 and freeze it so it cannot be changed? Freezing a value doesn't always work though, as I've experienced in Jumping Flash for the height aspect - an overflow checker is being done and I'm unsure how to bypass or override it (if I can figure that out, I could fulfill a quarter century wish of mine - getting above the upper clouds).
