Final Fantasy VI Pixel Remaster - Ch. 23 - Ancient Castle
Last time, we finally completely filled our roster of playable characters. First up, we got Mog and his prized Molulu's Charm. Next, we got ourselves a Yeti. And for good measure, we travelled into the belly of the Zone Eater and recruiter Gogo, the Mimic. We also picked up a couple of Espers and items. Now, we're going to tackle one of the few remaining scenarios left in the game: the Ancient Castle.
CHAPTER 23 - ANCIENT CASTLE
Much like some of the other optional scenarios you'll encounter in the World of Ruin, someone, somewhere will tip you off that there's something to be done. This quest is accessible as soon as you get the Falcon, but it's better left for the endgame. Put together a party and head to Figaro Castle. It's a good idea to start having your party learn spells like Reraise and Ultima, as they'll definitely come in handy very soon (or now, really). There's no mandatory boss in this area, but it does contain two pretty strong 'monster-in-a-box's: Master Tonberry and Soul Samurai.
Figaro should still be on the Kohlingen side, if you haven't gone back and moved it, that is. Move the castle and the guy will tell you that the Castle is rubbing against some rough substrate and keeps getting caught on something. Head to the prison and go through the passage located in the back of the jail cell. Previously, this led to the Cave to South Figaro, but now it will be a brand-new area. Many of the monsters in this area are weak against Holy, in case you've learned it from the Alexander magicite already.
There's only about three or four quick screens before we reach the Ancient Castle. One of the treasures in this cave will be the Master Tonberry. Master Tonberry has 22,000 HP and although he has no elemental weakness, he's susceptible to Sleep. So I had two characters dedicated to casting Sleep, while the others pummeled him with whatever I could. This works remarkably well, as I was able to beat him without him laying a finger on me. You'll get the Gladius for your troubles, which I gave to Edgar.
When you arrive at the Ancient Castle, you'll watch a few scenes depicting its history. The Esper Odin was the last line of defense in a battle of the War of the Magi, but he is ultimately turned to stone by a powerful magus. As you explore the castle, you'll find a treasure chest which will trigger the fight against Soul Samurai. This guy can be tough! He uses Water and Thunder Scrolls, which can do high damage to your entire party. Soul Samurai has a whopping 37,620 HP and is weak against Poison. Like Master Tonberry, he is susceptible to a different status ailment, Confuse.
So again, I had two characters concentrate on casting Confuse, while the other two pummeled away. If done correctly, Soul Samurai will waste its turn attacking itself, only to be Confused again a moment later. You'll gain the Master Scroll, a relic that allows you to attack four times. When combined with a Genji Glove, it will allow you to attack eight times! So have fun with that. In the castle, you'll find a petrified Odin, whose statue will then crumble and become the Odin magicite.
A few steps below the thrones, there'll be a switch you can hit to open a new staircase in the room to the right. But don't forget to grab the treasures in the room to the top right first. Now in the room to the right, you'll find a bookcase which contains the queen's diary. The queen was apparently in love with Odin. If Terra is with you, she will comment on the relationship between a human and an Esper. Down the stairs, you'll find the Blue Dragon, which is optional. I'll be tackling these soon, so I'll just skip it for now.
But at the far end of this room, you'll find a statue of the queen, who was apparently also petrified. The queen's statue will react to the Odin magicite and the queen's tears will transform it into the Raiden magicite. The Odin magicite teaches you Meteor, while Raiden teaches you 'Quick'. Don't worry too much about it, as the Crusader magicite will also teach you 'Meteor'. Do what you gotta do and then head outta here. It's time to call it a night...
