Final Fantasy VI Steam Anti-Norm - Dragon's Den (Part 15, Holy Dragon - Slaying)
Game: Final Fantasy VI
Port: Steam
Holy Dragon is probably one of my favorite Dragons. If the other dragons were more like this, then things would be a lot of entertaining in this dungeon for sure. Slaying this beast is required to access the Gold Dragon's path over at your other party. It also yields the only Katana in the game that increases base stats for Cyan: Zanmato.
This was also a bitch to record as I was helping someone fix a washing machine and we had to keep shutting off the power downstairs constantly. Also, needed to get an understanding of the rhythm this boss plays.

================
- Active Mode
- No Summoning Espers
- No Ultima/Quick
- No Phantom Rush
- No Valiant Knife/Ultima Weapon

PLAN
=====
This beast has 2 issues: The first one is the attack chains. One chain revolves around Saintly Beam and Holy casts (up to 3 attacks) and the other revolves around a chain of physical attacks and Heavenly Wrath (Attack x 4).
The second issue is more problematic. When the beast is struck, it has a 66% chance to cast Curaga on it'sef (undoing 6000+ damage) and then has a 33% chance to cast Heartless Angel (reducing all character's HP to 1). Both are a problem as 1 can undo damage and the other can be fatal if he gets his attack chain in.
The first thing you should do is get Reraise, Shell, Protect, Golem and Fenrir (if possible and needed) to get defenses going. After that, you can plan your assault.
So how do you deal with this crap? Simple, patience! The moment you see the boss attack, you issue all your commands in batches, starting with a Reflect on the Dragon (if he doesn't have it), followed by 2 non-Reflectable attacks and then finally ending the chain with a Curaga on everyone. This way, you can get all 4 commands on the stack without the Dragon intercepting them with his own moves and compensate for a potential Heartless Angel counter.
With Active on, Reflect lasts for about 1-2 chains before it needs to be reapplied. It has a knack of failing on you when you least expect it. Also, do not use any Bushidos past Fang (not even Sky), Jump, Rage, Dance and especially Umaro or it could ruin your rhythm. If you Dualcast, save this for the end of the chain and use a Reflect piercing spell first (Flood, Ultima, Meteor) before you Curaga everyone.
Also, unequip any Holy weapons you are using so you don't end up healing the boss instead.
