Final Fantasy VI - The Serpent Trench Remix
The Serpent Trench is one of those “random minor pieces” in the otherwise constantly reprising Final Fantasy VI soundtrack, but it’s always stuck with me as much more and is probably in my top 3 songs in the game. It’s become a favorite of mine to listen to when traveling as it really captures a wondrous adventuring vibe while also sounding appropriately aquatic, like the song is being played live leagues below sea level. It makes the whole Serpent Trench sequence seem like a dream within the game, and while it only lasts 5 minutes or less, I always found this to be one of the most memorable parts of the game due to the music and accompanying visualizations.
On that note, yes, I’m aware this song is really echo/reverb heavy on the bass, and that is definitely intentional to try and capture the same submerged quality of the original. Also, yes, I’m aware not everyone will be a fan of the “wave FX” and I was on the fence about putting them in but ultimately decided to do so and well, I think it works. When I listen to gaming music I want to feel like I’m either playing through or are immersed in the scene in the game, so I kept them in to fit with the visuals and further recreate what is happening over the music. Finally, a lot of the remixes I’ve heard of this song use more strings for the arpeggiating part but I changed this to a harp as I feel it adds to the ethereal, underwater feeling.
Alright, well I’ve reached my nerd rambling limit for the day so bottom line: enjoy.
