We're back in the world of Final Fantasy! So our continued pursuit of Sephiroth has taken us through the mako reactor of Mt. Corel. Here, we learned of Barret's backstory and why he despises Shinra so much.

Sephiroth was now spotted headed towards the dunes near the Golden Saucer. So we left off heading that way on a special ropeway that takes us straight there. Let's see what happens now!

CHAPTER 12 - COREL PRISON

Originally, I was going to call this chapter 'The Golden Saucer', but I believe that we eventually return to the Golden Saucer for what is a far more meaningful event later on. This is really just a pit stop.

So one annoying thing to remember here is that most places will only accept 'GP' instead of Gil. Even the save points here will charge you to save. Naturally, we start off with no GP. You'll need to earn GP by either playing the games in the Wonder Square, or by betting on the Chocobo Races.

However, we don't really 'need' to do this at this moment. After paying the exorbitant 3,000 Gil fee to enter, you'll see a brief scene at the station. Barret is still in a foul mood and doesn't feel much like having fun. Pick a partner to walk around with and then pick a place to check out.

This video at least enters each of the areas. But it would be fairly pointless and take too long to show you absolutely everything you can do here.

The important event things you'll need to do here are:
1) Go to Speed Square and meet Dio, owner of the Golden Saucer.
2) Go to Wonder Square and recruit Cait Sith.
3) Go to Battle Square and watch the scene here.

Note however, once you set foot in Battle Square you can't stop the game from progressing. Someone who was just here killed everyone. It wasn't Sephiroth, as everyone here was shot. You'll be accused by Dio of committing the killings and are thrown into Corel Prison.

Follow Barret one screen south. In this little town-like area, you'll unfortunately run into random battles. There's not much to see here. There's two houses and a truck. You can enter the truck's cabin and rest there.

In the truck, you'll meet Mr. Coates. He explains you need to get permission from the boss and win a Chocobo race in order to leave. Go to the smaller of the two houses and Barret will finish explaining his backstory.

It's hinted that Barret's friend Dyne is still alive and is the boss of Corel Prison. He also has a gun grafted to his arm just like Barret.

Head back one screen north. You'll notice now that the person standing guard at the gate has been killed. Pass through the gate and go one screen north.

From here, it's important that you go right through the opening in the fence and head one screen right. If you try going anywhere else, the desert seems to loop endlessly.

You can't return to this area later once you've completed it. So it's also important to find a monster called a 'Death Claw' and learn the very useful 'Laser' Enemy Skill. Laser essentially acts as the 'Gravity' spell in other FF's, so it will halve the target's HP. Neat!

Once you go through the opening in the fence and go right one screen, you'll arive at a junkyard. Go north to finally find Dyne. You'll fight him alone as Barret. Make sure to at least give him the 'Restore' materia.

BOSS BATTLE - Dyne (HP - 1,200)

Dyne only has three attacks: Needle Gun, S-Mine and Molotov Cocktail. None of them are terribly strong. The only danger lies towards the end of the battle, when he'll use two of these moves back-to-back.

But this is certainly not a hard battle. The game even kindly restores Barret's HP/MP before the fight. For the most part, you can just keep using Cure on yourself while Dyne's attacks fill up you Limit Gauge.

After the battle, Dyne will give you a pendant to give to Marlene and he falls down a cliff. You'll show the pendant to Mr. Coates as proof that you got the boss' permission, but he knows Dyne is dead...

Afterwards, you'll be given a manager who will let you race her Chocobo. Don't worry at all about your position until well into the second half of the race. The other chocobos should eventually flame out and use up all their stamina.

Wait until the right moment to start using your speed boost and you should be able to ride it to victory. When you win, you'll not only be granted freedom from Corel Prison, but Dio will give a dune buggy to cross the desert and rivers.

He also mentions that Sephiroth headed South to cross the river to Gongaga. So the search continues! It's time to take a break, but join us next time for 'Ch. 13 - Cosmo Canyon'.
