Final Fantasy VII - Ch. 13 - Cosmo Canyon
CHAPTER 13 - COSMO CANYON
So, this video took me longer than I expected, in part because I've also included the optional sidequest 'Gongaga'. There's a couple of good Enemy Skills you can grab throughout here as well. We left off just outside of the Golden Saucer in our newly gifted dune buggy. Riding the dune buggy is the only way you can actually enter and traverse this desert area.
Don't leave just yet. Look for a monster called a 'Harpy'. It looks like a three-headed chimera. It has a useful Enemy Skill called 'Aqualung', so make sure to pick it up. Now we'll want to head south and use the dune buggy to cross the river. Almost immediately after crossing, you'll see a weird destroyed location in the center of a forest. Let's go in.
This is an optional sidequest and you can even do it at a later time. But if you go here at this point in the game, you'll run into the Turks Reno and Rude. They'll be talking about what girls they like, lol. Afterwards, you'll fight.
BOSS BATTLE - Reno (1,000 HP) & Rude (2,000 HP)
So Reno is obviously the weaker of the two. When you beat one, the second one will run away shortly afterwards. Depending on who you beat, you'll get a different dropped item. If you beat Reno, you'll get 'Fairy Tale', a weapon for Aeris. If you beat Rude, you'll get an X-Potion. Use the Aqualung Enemy Skill to take out a good chunk of their HP.
After the battle, you can tour the area. There is a ruined Mako Reactor that contains the Titan summon materia. There's a monster that resembles a frog called 'Touch Me', which you can use to learn the 'Frog Song' Enemy Skill. Additionally, you can tour the town and find the 'Whie M-Phone' weapon for Cait Sith in the mayor's house. Leave when ready.
So now, we're going to hug the southern shore of Gongaga and make our way north. On the beach, you'll enounter a monster called a 'Beachplug' that looks like a squid. You can learn the 'Big Guard' Enemy Skill from it, however you'll need to bring Cait Sith to use Manipulate. Big Guard is a defense spell, so it will never normally cast it on an enemy.
As you continue to swing north, you'll cross another river before reaching a red, clay-like area called 'Cosmo Canyon'. Nestled among the cliff is a town. You can spot it through its iconic observatory. Go in! This is Cosmo Canyon, Red XIII's hometown. He'll leave you at the entrance. Roam around for a bit.
There isn't much to do, but this place is fairly cavernous, so it can take a moment to see everything. If you see Red, he'll mention that his father abadoned his family and was a coward.
There's a weapon shop with plenty of new goodies. When you're ready to move on, head to the observatory on top. It's reachable through a ladder in the middle of the room with the kid saying a door is super glued.
When you get here, you'll chat for a bit before Red XIII recommending Bugenhagen show you his 'apparatus'. You'll be asked to go find your friends first. If you did a thorough tour, you should have ran into somebody from your party at some point. Go talk to them to get your PHS on.
Now head back and you'll be treated to some good ol' 90s CGI. Afterwards, you confront Bugenhagen about Red XIII's father. Bugenhagen is surprised to hear that's what Red thinks. Return to the bonfire in the center of town to find everybody. Afterwards, Bugen will announce there's something he wants Red to see.
You'll now form a party with Cloud and Red. I chose Aeris since she is a natural healer. You'll meet Bugen at the superglued door. He'll open it, which leads to the 'Cave of the Gi'. In this first screen, activate the switch in the third cave to progress. You can learn the 'Death Sentence' Enemy Skill here from a Gi Spector or Sneaky Step.
The rest of the cave is fairly self-explanatory. If you cross a large spider web, you'll have to fight a monster called 'Stinger', which has a fair amount of HP. At the end you'll fight 'Gi Nattak'.
BOSS BATTLE - Gi Nattak (5,500 HP)
This is an undead monster, so I just used an X-Potion to take it out. They're a little rare now, but you can farm these later.
After the battle, you'll see a scene in which Red's father is redeemed. Red was originally going to stay at Cosmo Canyon, but decides to join you permanantly. Welp, it's time to take a break!
Welp, it's time for us to take a break. Join us next time for 'Ch. 14 - Nibelheim'.
