For a long time Final Fantasy was known as a turn based series, while there are gamers that love that, Final Fantasy VII Remake takes a different approach. I like to say that it takes turn based elements and mixes it with an action rpg play style. This is a welcomed change to the series that keeps the gameplay fresh and different. This is one of the many reasons why Final Fantasy VII Remake is possibly one of the best games this generation.

The materia system is as robust as ever allowing players to mix combinations and truly experiment with different play styles. All party members play completely different from one another and best of all have their own specialties that make it difficult to choose who you want to use.

Weapons are upgradable as well so you wont be forced to drop that Buster Sword for long if you so well choose to keep using it. Summons also make their first appearance in midgar with a diverse line up, some never seen before in the series. There are 2 classes of summons, large scale summons used in boss fights and the small scaled summons that can be activated once prompted in a battle. While this is a different approach I feel it managed the difficulty better than previous titles as summons were power houses that changed the tide of any battle without much effort.

Final Fantasy is well known for its incredible soundtrack that adds that seasoning to the stories told across the franchise, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is no exception to it. With a great selection of tracks that all blend seamlessly with the events happening on screen truly capture how I felt throughout the entire game. Hearing just what was done with the original soundtracks from Final Fantasy 7 was truly heart warming and consistently surprised me. There were also new tracks that captured the atmosphere of the game and lived up to the quality of the remade original tracks. The voice acting is truly enjoyable aside from some NPC’s being questionable the main cast is spot on and delivers an enjoyable and believable experience throughout my journey in Midgar.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake opens strong recreating moments from the original while also adding onto it that enhance the overall experience. My playtime by the time I rolled credits was roughly 32 hours including the 24 odd jobs that I completed. The story has some moments where you begin to question why it’s taking as long as it is to get through sections or what specific scenes add to the overall narrative of the game. However, that feeling of what I would call filler is quickly forgotten when you get to the juicy main story beats. Without spoiling the contents of the story it delivers some major surprises in the last 3 chapters that even I myself did not anticipate, and depending on how you feel about it this could drastically change how you feel about the story of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

The Final Fantasy Franchise is certainly no stranger to impressive visuals and the Remake is no exception to this. Graphically the game delivers and continually surprises me on just how beautiful it looks on the PS4 Pro. A steady frame rate of 30fps running at 1620p delivered an impressive experience. With that said the game does suffer from low resolution textures that could simply be patched in. However, given the time of this review and the ample time to patch the game it still has not received the patch it deserves. Another minor issue I had was the inability to mark way points on the map, which I found frustrating given that even Final Fantasy XV gave us the ability to do so. It feels like a miss when almost every game of a similar genre allows such a basic function. After you have completed FF7 Remake you will be able to revisits previous locations with the condition you start the chapter from the very start, I found this to be frustrating as again recent previous titles allowed us to return just before the final boss to visit previous locations. This serves as an inconvenience especially if you plan to obtain all the trophies. I do understand that naturally sector 7 would be in state that may not allow players to return as they did before but there could have been a simple work around for this.
