Current situation: The apprentice summoner of Besaid has been in the Cloister of Trials within the temple for almost two days. Inside, she prays to the Fayth, and if the prayer is heard, she becomes a fully-fledged summoner. Tidus, understanding that there's someone inside who may be in danger, barges into the inner parts of the temple despite everyone's insistence that tradition be followed. Wakka catches up with him just as he enters the Chamber of the Fayth, where they find the summoner's two guardians, Lulu and Kimahri, standing at the door. Summoner Yuna steps out, having completed her prayers and become full-fledged summoner.

Word of Tidus's antics has spread, and he's shunned as the rest of the villagers celebrate Yuna's ascension. Yuna takes a moment to speak with him, saying she didn't resent his actions, and that they'd have more time to talk, as they were leaving on the same boat in the morning. That night, Tidus overhears a heated conversation between Wakka and Lulu, where he learns that Wakka had a brother named Chappu who looked like Tidus. Chappu was with the crusaders, and died in a battle with Sin the previous year. It seems to be a source of tension between Wakka and Lulu.

The next day, Yuna gets a tearful sendoff at the docks from the townsfolk. Their first destination is Kilika island, then they'll change boats and head for Luca. On the ship, Tidus learns from Yuna that her father, summoner Braska, had a guardian named Jecht, the same as Tidus's father. They figure out that the day Jecht had died in Zanarkand is the day that he showed up in Spira. Before they can talk further, the ship lurches violently, as Sin appears from the ocean. The ship's crew attack Sin to try to draw it away from Kilika. Despite their best efforts, Sin crashes into Kilika, destroying a large part of it.

As the Aurochs spread out to help the townsfolk, Yuna performs a ritual called the sending, which Lulu explains guides the dead to the Farplane. Without being sent, the dead would continue to wander the land as fiends. Tidus finds the ritual horrifying. Once the town is stabilized, the group heads through the woods to Kilika Temple to pray for victory before the upcoming blitzball tournament.
