Final Fantasy XI | Hero to Zero: One PLD's Journey
0Welcome to another session of FFXI! Today I set out to see whether my old PLD job could help me regain some confidence as a tank after struggling to master RUN. Things started out well, but once it came time to throw friends/players into the mix, my foundation fell apart. In hindsight, trying to do my job with terrible gear, half my kit, a serious sleep debt, and expecting to succeed was a little precious (this is why we go back to town sometimes for gear and spells, even when trying to speed level, friends...) but it was no less frustrating when your sole purpose in life is to maintain enmity.
Not gonna lie, I left this session pretty crushed and ready to throw in the towel. The impact that trusts have on a low-level player tank remains a hefty hurdle to jump when you're new to tanking, and absent the kind of player etiquette I'm used to from the old days, it's not always enough to use the tactics that I remember to do the job. But I still want to make this happen if I can. I'll spend some time chilling and working on being less of a tryhard before I continue, since that mindset isn't helpful to learning, adapting, doing my job, OR being an all around decent human being.
I mean what I said at the end: I'm not mad at anyone specific. I'm mad at the slope of the mountain, and I don't think that's likely to change until I understand what I can do to overcome it. If folks have any guidance for a newbie tank, please fire away in the comments, because most of what's out there seems written for players at higher levels and doesn't help me with what I have now.
