Final Fantasy XIV suffered through a deeply troubled launch but in a true display of dedication (or perhaps desperation?) Square Enix eventually decided to pull the whole thing down, get back to the drawing board and remake substantial parts of the game. Having no previous experience with the online dimension of the Final Fantasy multiverse I'm not in a good position to say whether A Realm Reborn is the game FFXIV should have been all along or merely another case of too little, too late (although the pre-launch buzz among more multiplayer-oriented gamers seems to be surprisingly positive). However, since I did play some 20-30 hours of the weirdly MMO-aping singleplayer RPG Final Fantasy 12 a few years ago my first impressions of FFXIV:ARR is that this appears to be an updated and much prettier version of that divisive but fascinating PS2 JRPG. Judging by the wide range of (really big) starting areas and diverse environments this is one massive, impressively detailed world and the graphics - while perhaps not pushing every technical boundary imaginable - are definitely some of the sharpest I've ever seen in an online-focused game.
