3In his teenage years, Clive serves as Joshua's bodyguard, known as the First Shield of Rosaria, and is tasked with his protection and is subsequently blessed with some power from Phoenix, the Eikon of fire. On the day of a ritual to prove Joshua's claim, Sanbreque attacks and the Duke is killed, triggering Joshua's destructive awakening as the Phoenix. Another figure seemingly transformes into the Eikon Ifrit and kills the Phoenix. Clive's mother Anabella, who despises Clive's lack of blessing and betrayed Rosaria to preserve her bloodline, has him enslaved as a magical soldier in Sanbreque's army. Thirteen years later, Clive is sent behind enemy lines in a battle with the Iron Kingdom to assassinate their Dominant, revealed to be an enslaved Jill. He deserts, and is rescued by Cid, who agrees to help Clive search for the Dominant of Ifrit. Tracking word of a Dominant, they fight Benedikta, from whom Clive takes the power of her Eikon Garuda. A disturbed Benedikta is then attacked by bandits, and transforms into a raging Garuda, which in turn triggers Clive to transform into Ifrit and kill her.
While Clive briefly despairs at the fact he is Ifrit, Cid encourages him to keep searching for the figure he saw before he transformed. After Cid and Jill see the full oppression inflicted on magic users and their sympathizers in the occupied Rosaria, they join Cid in a quest to destroy the nations' Mothercrystals, which he sees as draining aether from the land and causing the Blight. They infiltrate Sanbreque's capital, but encounter a monster within the Mothercrystal who mortally wounds Cid before it is defeated and the Mothercrystal destroyed. The monster, dubbed Ultima, attempts to possess Clive. Joshua, who survived Ifrit's attack due to Phoenix's powers and was the Dominant held by Benedikta, stops and contains Ultima. Hugo, who was in love with Benedikta, is manipulated into believing Cid is responsible, and destroys their hideout. Five years later, Clive−now using the title of "Cid" and carrying on the old Cid's mission−uses the growing war between Sanbreque and the Dhalmekian Republic over the occupied Crystalline Dominion as a chance to destroy the Iron Kingdom's Mothercrystal. Ultima continues working through the worshipping Barnabas and the form of Anabella's son by Sanbreque's emperor.
He later fights and wounds Hugo, who is manipulated by Barnabas's agents into overusing his nation's Mothercrystal in pursuit of revenge. Clive kills Hugo and destroys the Dhalmekian Mothercrystal, gaining full control over Ifrit in the process. Under Joshua's advice, Dion stages a coup against Anabella, but in the process kills his father and comes under Ultima's control. Clive and Jill destroy the Dominion's Mothercrystal and rescue Joshua and Dion, while an unhinged Anabella kills herself. The group then move against Barnabas, eventually killing him and destroying Waloed's Mothercrystal, but Ultima reveals this to be part of his plan to shape Clive into a vessel through fights with other Dominants. Joshua's research reveals Ultima to be the avatar of an ancient species who created the Mothercrystals and Dominants as tools for their return after an earlier Blight. Clive, Joshua, and Dion mount a combined attack on Ultima's sky fortress of Origin. Dion is killed, and Joshua sacrifices himself to grant his powers to Clive, giving him the power to destroy and absorb Ultima. While housing Ultima's power, Clive resurrects Joshua, then destroys the final Mothercrystal within Origin to remove magic from Valisthea; Clive's fate is left ambiguous. A post-credits scene shows a family living without magic in a distant future, owning a book Joshua wrote about the game's events called Final Fantasy.
