If you thought Choro Q was the only Racing/RPG game on the market, you may be pleasantly surprised. Not only that, but this game was released in the U.S. back in the late eighties! While Choro Q predates Final Lap Twin, this game took RPGing and Racing and ran with it, making the game rather original. The earlier Choro Q games were about racing, power-ups and customization of your parts and it took Choro Q many years later to do something similar such as allowing you to explore towns and gathering information from NPCs.

In this game, you can pick your standard Race Mode or the meat and potatoes, the Quest Mode. During your quest, you get huge passwords you need to ask your dad for, gather clues on where to go, and buy different parts as equipment. Besides the usual performance enhancers, you can also buy new bodies. The more advanced your ride, the more you intimidate the competition, which allows you to get out of races.

Speaking of races, you will be stopped by various racers in an RPG random-encounter fashion. In the beginning, it can get really annoying, but once you get a body or two, you can just tell them to shoo. Different racers have different quirks and strategies that can help you beat them and they reward money to you when you win (or even if you lose...your dad feels bad for you and gives you a few hundred bucks).

Besides the standard encounters, you also have Grand-Prix races where you race against a boss. Beating them gives you parts with special abilities, such as teleporting to towns you've already visited or a map of the world. This game was somewhat ahead of its time. This video is two parts: The introduction segment and then a transition into a pre-played game with some car upgrades to demonstrate the game quickly. Enjoy.
