Finn Mattingly: Seaside Contemplation for solo violin (2020)
Seaside Contemplation for Solo Violin was written in August 2020 for Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu by young American composer, Finn Mattingly.
The piece took inspirations from outdoor sounds like seagulls and airplanes, and creatively portrays those sounds with extended techniques and neutral chord progressions.
The piece was premiered on November 8th 2020 at Wu's outdoor concert series, Sunkiss'd Mozart. Prior to the performance, Wu and Mattingly met over Zoom to develop the piece together toward this final version. It is a project Wu started, inspired by her work at the Curtis Institute of Music Young Artist Summer Program, to work with young composers to help them further the understanding of writing for the violin, as well as having an opportunity to have a new piece written and performed.
