Chapter 4 Two Falchions

One of the game's shortest maps. I get to deploy only six characters, meaning a half of the army warms the bench alongside Frederick, whose return may be a long time away.

The enemy density is low, allowing Sully/Vaike and Chrom/Robin to solo their sides of the map with ease. Sumia ends up without a partner, which doesn't prevent her from one-rounding a sole mage. If she pairs up with Sully, whom she supports, she has enough AS to double boss Marth, considerably simplifying the boss encounter.

Robin is, curiously, the party's lowest-levelled unit, spending most of her time in the back of a pair-up unit - often a different one each map. This is despite me not having ever unequipped Veteran, which is THE thing that makes the Avatar really overpowered in Awakening. With the prospect of possibly learning Rally Spectrum in the future, Robin is an appealing support unit, making it sensible to keep her level as low as possible. The same applies to Lissa, whose healing becomes gradually more crucial to surviving the later maps. As long as we have at least one healer available, we have a much easier time. It seems wise to also have good pairup bots available instead of units like Donnel with ludicrous pair-up bonuses to assist the better units from the back of pair-up.

Chapter 5 The Exalt and the King

Now this is a proper Awakening map, where enemies are numerous and reinforcements have to be taken into consideration. The lack of a single duo capable of taking on every threat at 1-2 range is apparent with the lack of snowballed Veteran!Robin, Frederick or Sumia. Chrom is clearly the strongest unit in the army with effective damage against wyverns (who end up attacking somebody else much of the time anyway) and high stats when paired up with Vaike, doubling enemy fighters and taking close to no damage from mercs. Having accumulated 10 levels worth of experience by the end of the chapter, he turns out okay - slightly below average in strength and speed, and a tiny bit over the average defence. It was a good decision on my part to avoid resetting for rigged level-ups, considering the restrictions set I opted for makes the challenge quite playable without any extreme measures to overcome the adversities in the way.

The wyverns approaching from both sides endanger my units, especially ones who cannot counter or take more than one round of combat. The newcomers Maribelle and Ricken are especially vulnerable, though Ricken's accurate chip in Elwind, effective against the wyverns, makes it easy to weaken powerful enemies and give him experience. Miriel with a Lon'qu pairup and Lon'qu himself boasting great offence with the killing edge are also good alternative ways of dealing with the riders. Virion and some team effort can also take one down fairly easily, and I prioritise feeding Virion exp as usual seeing how underwhelming he is in his archer class.

The new units here are all very much welcome. Ricken is a good pairup bot for units dishing out magical damage, though I'm not sure if he's good enough to take on hordes of enemies with his low speed and defence stats. Lon'qu is effective for eliminating a single enemy and helping somebody else double, though he wishes he could have 1-2 range without the wyvern reclass option. Finally, Maribelle is very desirable as a second healer after Lissa, who was needed so much during this entire map that she's actually caught up with the combat units in experience. Having one of them readily available for staffbotting during each map seems like it's going to become a playthrough staple.
