HMS Protector, the Royal Navy's new Ice Patrol ship, has begun her first deployment. Taking over from the stricken HMS Endurance, she and her 55-crew members will spend nearly 8 months in the South Atlantic Oceans, doing vital scientific work and helping the British Antarctic Survey. The information from HMS Protector's will go into charts that help mariners from Cruise Ships to scientific expeditions. She will also assist the scientists from the British Antarctic Survey.
