Five Nights at Wario's is a fangame series inspired by Scott Cawthon's original Five Nights at Freddy's. Instead of the FNaF series' staple of using animatronic enemies, Five Nights at Wario's features the undead bodies of many Super Mario characters as enemies, including Wario, Waluigi, Luigi, Mario, etc. It was developed by WwwWario, who was previously known for his Super Wario series of games.
Inspired by a fan-made GIF of Wario flashing his face in the FNAF 1 Office instead of Freddy, Five Nights at Wario's first began development in late 2014. On December 12, 2014, the game was announced to the public for the first time on YouTube, under the title FIVE NIGHTS AT WARIO'S [v0.0].
Eventually a demo would release, and not long after the full game followed, releasing on January 6 2015.
Throughout 2015, many of its sequels would also be developed and published, specifically Five Nights at Wario's 2, 3, and Origins. One year later in 2016, Five Nights at Wario's 4 was released, and at the time, it was meant to be the final game in the series. A video explaining the whole story at the time would be published a year later on June 3, 2017. After this, the series went silent.
However, on May 1, 2020, seemingly out of nowhere, WwwWario announced 2.0 updates for every single game in the series, promising new content and a "super easter egg" across the whole series, which would eventually become known as the Cross-Game Quest. Throughout early to mid 2020, the updates would release individually along with the quest. These updates revived a lot of interest in the series again, and a large community grew around this time.
Later on November 26, Five Shows at Wario's, the sixth and final game in the series, was announced to the public. On February 25, 2021, the game was released. It was and still remains the largest Five Nights at Wario's game. On September 25, a massive expansion to the game called Five Shows at Wario's DX (or Director's Cut) was released, which was the confirmed finale of the series.
Throughout the years, Five Nights at Wario's was praised for its creative and unique ideas to shake up the FNAF formula, especially compared to other fangames during the early age. When it was new, notable YouTubers such as Markiplier played the game.
Its most common criticism over the years has been directed at the game's presentation. Unlike most fangames which either use a 2D or 3D style, FNAW instead uses official Nintendo models for the characters and Google Images for the rooms, edited in Photoshop to appear more spooky. Some find this style to be ugly, and this point is often used to explain why the series isn't as good as many say.
Nevertheless, Five Nights at Wario's has undoubtedly impacted the FNAF fangame scene as a whole with its creativity. It has also spawned its own FNAW fangame community, starting in mid 2020 with fangames such as FNAW3: Custom Room Edition and the Return to the Factory series. From then to now, over one hundred FNAW fangames have been at least announced and have Game Jolt pages.
