Flash Koibito-Kun [FLASH 恋人クン] Game Sample 2/2: WonderSwan Color
Original Air Date: October 15th, 2009
Flash Koibito-Kun is a fun and simple game about a young man whose heart is broken by a female he interacted with and how he would find help at an unlikely place: The Ninja School of Love, or the "Ren'ai Dojo" (恋愛道場, it's on the introduction's sign)! That's right, you're gonna learn how to find love ninja-style, and the Ren'ai Master is a strict tutor! When you first stumble upon the Ren'ai Master and open the gate to the dojo, it will seem as though you've entered hell, but that is just the beginning! You will learn the basics of relationships and powerful love wazas and then travel out into the wide open world with your love Ren'ai Radar (the WonderSwan with the heart that humorously alerts you when love is near) to practice what you've learned. I guess you can say that you also play the role of a pimp.
The objective is simple: Just guide the flashing hearts to the ladies at the end of the level in a conveyor belt fashion using a love ninja to chip away their hit points, and win the level. If you let too many hearts get crushed, you'll lose. If you want to really earn lots of points and make the ladies swoon, you'll need to learn how to take advantage of the abilities of ninja-like love. The love ninja's most potent ability is being capable of holding off the protagonist's love from reaching its destination and let it stockpile. By doing so, you'll create a chain that gives you way more points. Earning different scores will net you either one, two, or three hearts at the end of the level (one for basic relations, two for a half-decent performance, and three for max). If you're really good, you'll be netting giant hearts to the girls.
Of course, there are problems. The Ren'ai Master will make things more difficult as the girls fall for you more by speeding up the line. The levels may also obstruct your view or present other hazards. The Ren'ai Master may grant you special abilities that help you as much as harm you, such as create a mirror image of you that helps until it runs out. Nobody said it would be easy! It's up to you to make sure the love gets where it needs to go. The presentation and sound is good for a WSC title (the music could use more variety), and well above average for a game of this genre on the system. The game is uncommon, but one of the "cheaper" WSC games.
So far, I'm uploading the introduction to getting to the city. The first three battles in the Ren'ai Dojo are against three Ren'ai Teachers: Sakura, Ageha, and Shinobu. The city battle is against Yuki. What does all this "Ren'ai" business mean? Ren'ai [恋愛] means romantic, romance, love, love-making, passion, emotion, affections, and things of that nature. It is said to be a coined expression and an idea imported from abroad because it had not existed in Japan centuries ago and is part of the modernization of the Japanese language. Enjoy.
Notes: Koibito means "lover" or "Sweetheart". When we can, we don't just show video games, we try to spread a little culture too. Woot!
