Flashback The Quest for Identity is a platforming game made by Delphine Software and was published by U.S Gold. The game was released around 1992

It was also ported to A LOT of other platforms. Amiga, PC, Sega MegaDrive/Genesis, Super Nintendo, Mega CD, 3DO, Apple Mac just to name a few.

Flashback is probably one of those "Gems from the Past" because it is one of the best platformer games that ever existed right next to Another World and Prince of Persia. All those 3 games were pretty similar in their style because they all used the rotoscoping technology for their animations and cinematics.

Flashback has all the stuff that is typical for these kind of games like running, jumping, hanging on ledges and so on and the animations were wonderfully done.

Next to the default platformer functions Flashback did also try to give you the illusion of an interactive world which was not really typical for these kind of games. The first level (seen in this video) is just standard platforming and shooting, but as soon as you get to New Washington you are gonna interact with NPC's, do some side missions, use a tram to get to other places and even be a contestant in a TV show named Death Tower (which kinda reminds you a bit of the movie Running Man )

All of this was pretty simple and basic stuff but for its time and genre it was very good and it was what made Flashback so different from the others.

The game was pretty realistic like Another\Prince but because the levels in Flashback were a bit more complex than in the other games there are 2 ways to make your life easier.

There are for example save points scattered around the levels which can serve as a checkpoint if you die but those are not quite as common as you would like them to be.

The other method is your shield. It can absorb 4 hits before you die and if your shield is low you have to look for an energy station where you can reload its power. It does not save your game progress but it gives you more chances to beat the current level.

I'm not gonna spoil anything from the story of the game but it reminds you of Total Recall a bit. The game is kinda like an homage to various scifi movies from the 80's but If I think about it which game wasn't back then? ;)
