The Vantaa (Finnish: Vantaanjoki, Swedish: Vanda å) is a 101-kilometre (63 mi) long river in Southern Finland. The river starts from the lake Erkylänjärvi in Hausjärvi and flows into the Gulf of Finland at Vanhankaupunginselkä in Helsinki. One of the tributaries of the Vantaa river is Keravanjoki that flows through the town of Kerava north of Helsinki.
A river is a natural flowing watercourse, usually freshwater, flowing towards an ocean, sea, lake or another river. In some cases, a river flows into the ground and becomes dry at the end of its course without reaching another body of water. Small rivers can be referred to using names such as stream, creek, brook, rivulet, and rill. There are no official definitions for the generic term river as applied to geographic features, although in some countries or communities a stream is defined by its size. Many names for small rivers are specific to geographic location; examples are "run" in some parts of the United States, "burn" in Scotland and northeast England, and "beck" in northern England. Sometimes a river is defined as being larger than a creek, but not always: the language is vague. Beer floating (Kaljakellunta in Finnish) is an open and unofficial Finnish summer event. In the event, the participants float on the Kerava River or on the Vantaa River from Vantaa to a downstream riverside beach in Helsinki.
Vantaanjoki (ruots. Vanda å) on Vantaanjoen vesistön 101 kilometriä pitkä laskujoki eteläisessä Suomessa. Vantaanjoki alkaa Hausjärveltä Erkylänjärvestä ja laskee Suomenlahteen Helsingissä Vanhankaupunginlahdella. Valuma-alueen pinta-ala on 1 685 km² ja sen vaikutusalueella asuu noin 1,1 miljoonaa ihmistä.
Vanhankaupunginkoski on kulttuurihistoriallisesti merkittävä koski Vantaanjoen suussa Helsingin Vanhankaupunginselän pohjukassa. Kosken alkuperäinen nimi on Helsinge fors eli Helsinginkoski, jonka ääreen Helsingin kaupunki (ruots. Helsingfors) perustettiin vuonna 1550. Koski sijaitsee Vanhankaupungin kaupunginosassa. Koski jakautuu itähaaraan ja länsihaaraan, joiden väliin jää Kuninkaankartanonsaari. Kosken läntinen haara on padottu.
