Foldable Phones. Huawei vs Samsung. Who wore it best?
Samsung launched the Galaxy Fold just before Mobile World Congress, while Huawei showed off their new foldable Smartphone, the Mate X during the show. Nicole Scott and Umit Memisoglu of Mobile Geeks compare Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X and discuss the pros and cons of each device.
The foldable form factor is new, so there is no right or wrong way to do it. Yet. The Samsung Galaxy Fold and the Huawei Mate X have two dramatically different takes on how to make a phone that folds.
Samsung Galaxy Fold vs Haiwei Mate X design
Samsung has the display on the inside, protected by a hard case and a 4.X display on the outside. The Huawei Mate X has a single display that wraps around the outside of the case.
The Galaxy Fold likely has a more durable more deliberate build, the display is protected by a hard cover. The Mate X has a far more simplistic design which feels more elegant, it’s one display that is used as the smartphone display while folded.
Both designs have drawbacks though less sleek in design the Galaxy Fold is likely the better thought out of the two. To allow for the foldable form factor the display is made out of a very durable plastic, the downside: It will scratch very easily.
The display wrapped around the exterior of the Mate X leaves it vulnerable to scuffs and scratches. It seems Huawei is aware of this and included a case.
