In this video, I use the Gameshark code 010235CC to trick the game into thinking the second option is still being held down, and swap a non-existing second Pokémon with the first one. This was possible in the Japanese versions via select button glitches; specifically the dokokashira door glitch, but select button glitches were fixed in the English versions and Japanese Yellow (see below). This video shows that swapping the second item with the first Pokémon without a second Pokémon (the dokokashira door glitch) would function differently in the English versions and causes some map and music glitches instead.
In the Japanese versions of the main-series Pokémon games, with the exception of Pocket Monsters Pikachu (Japanese Pokémon Yellow) it was possible to keep the cursor chosen on an item via the select button after the menu is closed.
When the player activates the select button the game writes to address the WRAM Address 0xCC35 (which is coincidentally the same in both the Japanese and English versions, except English Yellow where the address is at 0xCC34). The value depends on which item is being held down and a value of 0 means the select button isn't held down (e.g. 02 means the second button is held down on the second option from a menu). Initially, when the menu is closed the game would keep the stored value in memory and only reset it to 00 when the Pokémon menu was opened via the start button; meaning opening the Pokémon menu through battle or the Day Care Centre would keep the select button highlighted in the position it originally was. Japanese Yellow and the localisations finally patched the select button glitch by making the value in 0xCC35 reset to 00 as soon as the menu is closed, but the potential for select button glitching in the English versions is still there if there is a possible way to manipulate the value through other means.
