18The latest automotive technology is making us all a little safer on the road. You don't even have to spend big money to get impressive features like forward collision warning. Today, we're demonstrating how it works.
As you might expect, a forward-collision alert or warning system is exactly what it sounds like: technology that alerts you to an impending crash from the front. On most cars, the system uses a camera or radar system to monitor the road in front of you. You'll get a warning if the sensors detect that you're getting too close to an object or vehicle in the road ahead.
In our Volvo S60 test car, the system alerts you to a possible forward collision in two ways -- a flashing light on the dashboard and an audible beeping nose -- but every automaker's system is different. In some cases, forward collision warning systems will even help you avoid a crash by applying the brakes to help you stop. That's true in our Volvo S60 test car, which offers both a warning and, when necessary, automatic braking.
