Volvo used to be the king of station wagons, but when crossover SUVs came along, the company started building those instead. Nothing against Volvo's crossovers, but we've got good news: The Swedes are back in the wagon game with the new 2015 Volvo V60, and it's like they never left. Remember those neat old Volvo wagons such as the iconic 240 and the lovably boxy 740 and 850? That's the noble lineage that the V60 carries on. Here are five reasons why the Volvo's latest wagon is a stunning return to form.
1. High-Tech Engines
You're going to get a turbocharged engine no matter which V60 you choose, and we've seen two of them before: the smooth 5-cylinder with 250 horsepower, and the strong 6-cylinder with 325 hp. If you don't need all-wheel drive, you can get the new 4-cylinder turbo instead. It makes a respectable 240 hp, and here's the kicker: It gets 37 miles per gallon on the highway, which is more like an economy car than a luxury wagon. You can't go wrong with this trio, but we'd have a hard time turning down the turbo four's mix of performance and efficiency.
2. Cool Swedish Style
Beauty's in the eye of the beholder, but we think you'll agree: The V60 is one hot-looking wagon. Wagons aren't usually fashion leaders, but the V60's an exception. You could take this car to a red-carpet premiere and it wouldn't look out of place.
3. Wagon Practicality
If you need more cargo space than a sedan can manage, the V60's a great solution. There's plenty of room behind the rear seats for a pet, a guitar or pretty much anything else you can think of. If you need more space, just fold the rear seatbacks down. It's like having a luxury car and your own personal delivery van, all rolled into one.
4. Perfect Seats
The V60's front seats feel like they were designed by a chiropractor. The support is perfect, and the cushioning is a great compromise between firm and soft. You can even get unique built-in rear booster seats if you need them for the kids. Volvo's been making world-class seats for decades, and that's one thing that's not going to change.
5. Mature Driving Character
The V60 isn't quite a sport wagon, and that's a good thing. Don't get us wrong, the handling is certainly secure, with a lower center of gravity than any crossover. The V60 also rides like a luxury car, not a sports car, which is something most buyers will really appreciate. It's a classy looking car, and it rides like it, too.
AutoTrader Says
With the 2015 Volvo V60, the Volvo wagon is back. Don't buy a crossover without trying this wagon first.
