Freespace: Between the Ashes - Groundhog Day
4This is the eighteenth mission of the Between the Ashes campaign anthology's first campaign, Slaves of Chaos. BtA is a series of three campaigns for Freespace 2, all set between the events of Silent Threat: Reborn and the start of the Freespace 2 campaign.
The Antares Federation, the separatist political party we've heard so much about in the Editorials section in the Newsroom, has seized power in an apparent coup and has started openly cooperating with the Hammer of Light in their attempts to find and destroy the Intrepid or drive it from the system. In this mission, we embark on a daring operation to separate the two Hammer of Light destroyers and defeat them in detail. The Intrepid, using a route known to be under surveillance, will enter the Iraklion Corridor in order to draw the HLD Frontier to Masada Station. After doing this, it will withdraw again, running silent, and move to Novograd Station. At Masada, we have reactivated the station defenses. Unfortunately the sensor and guidance systems for the mortar platforms, the station's primary heavy defenses, were never installed, so they must be manually controlled. That's where Alpha 1 comes in. We must manually dial in targets for the artillery and call the strikes.
Unlike previous Freespace content on the channel, this is going to be a blind first play! Between the Ashes was released during my decade off from this game, so all of this will be brand new to me as I play it. A sequel, Between the Ashes 2, is in development, but won't release until 2022.
