Game Developer Risked Going BANKRUPT in Order to Release Game
159In 1990, the game publisher Psygnosis was shown a demo for the amiga called “Puggs in Space”. The demo featured a short red alien named Puggsy. The company was impressed with what they saw, so they recruited Travelers Tales to make a game based on it. Travelers Tales took the character and made it into a platformer, similar to Super Mario World. For it's time, the game shows advanced physics and pushed the limits of the Sega Genesis.
Disney Interactive took notice of Travelers Tales' impressive game and offered them the opportunity to make Disney-license games. Travelers Tales started with Mickey Mania, which pays homage to all of the older Mickey Mouse cartoons, including steamboat willy, the mad doctor and a few others. The game was mostly well received with some small complaints being about the lack of difficulty.
With two successful games under their belt, Travelers Tales was offered to complete their hardest task yet, make a game based off a movie that wasn't released yet, and for the first time ever, release it on the same day as the movie.
