How I love when classic titles up to decades get a sequel or a remake,
a pleasant surprise for any retro gamer whether you were lucky enough to grow up in that retro era or have the pleasure of playing these retro games in the present, or both!
Ganryu is one of those titles that was released just before the turn of the millennium for the Neo Geo MVS. (Later also on the dreamcast)
Most of the gameplay in this 2D action side scroller consists of walking, jumping, exploring and fighting but with great hack & slash action.
You explore the stages and fight or dodge the enemies that attack you with swords, kunai and other projectiles.
Fortunately, you can deflect the kunai with your sword, attack with your own sword, and throw your own kunai.
It is also possible to dash along or through the weaker enemies, but you have to watch out for flying projectiles or unexpected abysses.
Dash is also useful with the stronger enemies, because it allows you to stun them for a while, so that you can attack them undisturbed.
Most enemies are not difficult to take out, but they can still cause problems. They can sometimes overwhelm you by coming all at once and you will lose health if you touch them. Sometimes there are also a lot of projectiles in the field so you have to be careful.
In addition to his sword and kunai, Musashi also has access to Kami magic (fire, wind, lightning, heal).
With Kami magic you can perform a special attack, heal yourself or make yourself immune to all attacks for a short period.
You cannot use your Kami magic right away, as you must first fill a meter by picking up the Kami items that the defeated enemies drop.
When you die, you lose the accumulated magic and you have to start all over again. So it's wise to use this when you're running out of health to heal yourself or just take out those few enemies with magic to reach the next checkpoint. If you can get to the final boss with a full Kami Magic meter, you definitely have an advantage. The boss of each act is a demon that pretends to be an old acquaintance of Musashi. They have several attacks that you have to dodge to create an opening for you to strike. Once you get the hang of the patterns, the bosses are definitely doable.
Ganryu 21 is a very entertaining game with old school side scrolling action with evolving difficulty
The game looks good because of the pixel art. The enemies and bosses present a fair challenge, but are doable if you know their attacks and movements.
