Sephonie immediately draws comparisons to other classic 3D platformer styles in terms of looks and gameplay.
The trio of protagonists explore the caves, forests and dreamscapes of the titular island.
While you must find and interact with ecological key species, you will also learn about the mystery at the heart of the island. As they progress through the game, the trio gain new abilities and make their way through escalating, difficult challenges.
Each member of the aforementioned trio is a biologist. They sincerely want to learn more about the island, though the specter of their international research team hangs over any discovery. There are optional collectibles, but they are trinkets and memories that our scientists brought to the island, not the island's own resources.
Forgotten photos, beloved recipes, even just the memory of high school climbing complete the collectibles.
Even the biologists' newfound skills come from a deeper understanding of Sephonie, rather than a powerful trinket
Basically, however, Sephonie is optimistic.
Even as it stares into the heart of the global empire, it harbors a vibrant, ecological image.
Exploring Sephonie reveals a natural world that is not dead or even dying, that is not separated from humanity, cannot be contained, tamed or repaired.
In short, Sephonie is a nice game. It swings between life and death, classic genre conventions and thoughtful subversion,
Like the island itself, Sephonie uses metaphors to build a distant vision of a tragic and hopeful future.
