Composition for me here, swords as a base. You don't really need a huge number of swords in a typical army, because you need to support them with at least some other competent infantry. Beyond that, it's vital that your army includes good supporting units. If you don't happen to like guns, you could always have a purely melee army and try to rush, but I don't honestly think that strategy is as effective.

My opponent had the same general idea as me, but he lacked that one element that I was talking about, those bows. The guns on both of our sides managed to go toe to toe, but when you have to account for that long reload time, suddenly, the archers become far more deadly. Remember, guns are all about that one crippling volley, they aren't much in a sustained fight except against other guns.

In melee, my powerful, reliable swords managed to outmatch my opponent's larger swarm of unreliable infantry, and his lower numbers of no-dachi, my cav were able to pull down those mounted gunners, and my ranged compliment managed to both pull my enemy forward and really hammer his infantry as they rushed in.

Against other compositions, you'll have to learn how to use your units differently, and you'll need to also adjust things based on map. But so long as you try to make sure your units are working to their strengths, you should be fine.

For the record, I only beat Heir because I go super try hard when I see Patchy in this game, (or the wizard of cannae back when I played him.) If you see him, tell him "Yuki says hi!."
