Gex completes his first secret level. There are four of these, one in each hub area. They each contain a unique collectible (a shield in this NYC one). Completing all four of them unlocks the vault in Mission Control.

There's a choice of three characters to beat the secret stages with, but so far we only have Gex available. You only need to beat the level once to get the collectible and beating it with the other characters isn't needed for 100% completion, it's just something you can do for fun.
