Ghost Trick Phantom Detective - Game Review

Welcome back, everyone, to the "Veteran Game" Youtube channel! Today, we're revisiting an old gem that stole the hearts of many gaming enthusiasts back in the day: Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective. As the Nintendo DS era neared its end, this game exploded onto the scene alongside other classic titles like Okamiden, Radiant Historia, Dragon Quest VI, and Pokémon Black & White. And now, with its new HD remaster, the adventure can begin once more.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective was the brainchild of Shu Takumi, the creative genius behind the Phoenix Wright series. Imagine waking up in a junkyard, face-down, with no memory of your life or how you died. Well, that's exactly what happens to Sissel, the protagonist of our story. With only one night to figure out the mystery behind his murder before his spirit moves on to the afterlife, Sissel embarks on an adventure that has him saving lives and discovering his past.

Sissel, being a ghost, interacts with the world by manipulating objects around him, a unique mechanic that forms the core of the game’s puzzle-solving element. These hand-drawn 2D settings come to life as you explore various locations around the city, from chic apartments to prisons, and even a chicken restaurant.

Throughout the game, Sissel has to use his ghost powers to protect characters like Lynne, a go-getter detective, from various assassins. And when he arrives too late and a character has died, he can rewind time to watch the last four minutes of the victim’s life, a unique tool for crafting solutions to these puzzles.

What makes Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective especially engrossing is the narrative and the cast of unique characters. Shu Takumi’s writing stands out, crafting memorable moments and characters with an eccentric charm that will keep you engaged from beginning to end.

The original game was widely appreciated for its incredibly fluid character animation, a feature that is preserved and enhanced in the remastered version. The characters, originally created as 3D models before being rendered into 2D sprites, retain their fluidity while enjoying an HD glow-up. The end result is a polished, visually appealing experience that enhances the overall gameplay.

That being said, the game’s roots in the Nintendo DS era are unmissable. The transition from touch controls to a traditional controller has been well executed, and while some elements like the UI and certain character portraits might feel too big on a television screen, these are minor complaints compared to the overall charm of this title.

The remastered version also offers additional features like challenges, rearranged classic music tracks, new music tracks, a collection of artwork and concept art, and the sliding puzzles from the mobile version of the game.

All in all, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective remains an absolute gem in the world of adventure games. Even if we don't get another entry in the series, the joy of being able to revisit this beautifully crafted world in its remastered glory is a delight in itself. Whether you're a veteran fan or a newcomer to the series, this is one game you definitely don't want to miss out on. Happy gaming, everyone!
