Brotato - Game Review
Brotato - Game Review
Hey there, gaming enthusiasts! Welcome back to our "Veteran Game" YouTube channel. Today, we're going to be sinking our teeth into an indie title that has been making waves in the Early Access world, and it's called Brotato.
Brotato is an impressive success story from the indie space, having earned an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating from nearly 35,000 reviews and already reaching an astounding 2 million units in sales, all at the affordable price point of just $5.
Created by the talented solo developer Thomas Gevraud, Brotato skillfully combines mechanics from a few different genres to appeal to a very specific niche of gamers. Picture the arena shooter gameplay of Vampire Survivors, spliced with the character and item mechanics of The Binding of Isaac, and you've got Brotato.
The game might lack depth in terms of storyline or a detailed world outside of your run against alien hordes, but it more than compensates for this with its pulse-pounding gameplay and diverse builds that can be reconfigured with each refresh.
As you embark on a run in Brotato, you'll get to choose from several different heads to add to your potato body, each offering bonuses to things like HP, damage, or more niche areas like harvesting or engineering. After this initial selection, you're plunged straight into the action, battling massive numbers of aliens eager to dismantle your starchy avatar.
Despite the simplistic square arena, you'll find yourself engrossed in the task of evading enemy attacks and retaliating based on the items you collect. While there's a slight disappointment in the lack of arena variety, the simplicity is not a game-ruiner. Brotato hones in on the joy of the gameplay, drawing on arcade influences to keep you hooked from one run to the next.
Enemies, for the most part, ramp up in difficulty by bulking up to deliver and withstand more damage. Some shoot back, some charge, but overall, the enemy types could use a little more variety. Still, these criticisms are minor when considering the heart of Brotato: the gameplay.
Diving into the roguelite mechanic of Brotato, you'll find yourself crafting fascinating builds. Opt for a melee style or choose to attack from a distance. Decide between using bare fists, guns, knives, or even magical devices. Each combination offers a unique gameplay experience, keeping things fresh and interesting. For example, the engineering route lets you lay turrets and mines, shifting most of the combat to your devices. Other items enable life-stealing, power boosts, or cause magical trees to appear, which you can destroy for extra materials.
Despite its limitations, Brotato does an exceptional job at offering an addictive, fun-filled gaming experience at a very reasonable price. While you might recognize mechanics from other games, Brotato successfully brings them together into a cohesive, entertaining package that keeps you coming back for just a few more runs each day. If you're a fan of pure, arcade-like gameplay where the action is king, Brotato is absolutely worth your time.
So, in the end, Brotato is a charming title that compensates for its lack of depth and variety by being an addictive and engaging arcade-style game. It manages to turn a mash-up of familiar mechanics into a unique experience that will keep you coming back for more.
That's it for today's review, folks. Keep gaming, and stay tuned for more content right here on our channel. Until next time!
