C-Smash VRS - Game Review
Hello, gaming aficionados! Welcome back to our "Veteran Game" YouTube channel. Today, we are stepping into a virtual time machine to revisit a game first launched back in 2001, reimagined and brought back to life with a modern twist - this is C-Smash VRS.
For those who may not remember, C-Smash VRS finds its roots in the Dreamcast game Cosmic Smash, an intriguing amalgamation of racquet sports like Squash and classic arcade games like Pong and Breakout. The game was a vision of the future with sparse yet clean visuals and a unique charm that was quintessentially SEGA.
Now, fast forward to 2023, and we have C-Smash VRS, a virtual reality reiteration of the classic title with the added feature of online versus modes. Thanks to the capabilities of PlayStation 5 and PSVR2, this futuristic concept is now a reality, and boy, is it a blast!
In the game, you assume the role of a spectral figure. Matches begin with you hoisting the ball toward you and smashing it back. It's intuitive and echoes the mechanics of Tennis, Squash, Badminton, or even Wii Sports. The 'space ball' reacts naturally to your moves, whether it's top spin, backspin, or a certain angle hit. It's a surreal experience to see the ball move as it would in reality, only now you're in a zero-gravity room!
Much like the game Breakout, the idea is to keep the ball in motion and break through obstacles as quickly as possible because time is ticking away. But, beware, it might feel a tad unfair to those who don’t have enough space for a full room-scale experience. There's an option to play seated or standing, controlling your movement with the left stick, but it's undeniable that C-Smash VRS truly shines with room-scale movement, allowing you to dash around and play it like a real sport.
The game's single-player campaign can be a bit harsh at times with a relentless timer. Once you run out of time, it's game over, and you have to start all over again. Although there's a Zen Mode that lets you restart the stage, the timer continues to tick away mercilessly. The timer, placed on the floor, can often be overlooked due to the fast-paced nature of the game, which adds to the challenge.
That said, where C-Smash VRS really excels is in its online multiplayer. With a community of like-minded players, the multiplayer mode offers four fantastic modes to enjoy. Whether it's playing against real opponents in a control-type mode or a straightforward 1v1, it's a rush to experience a sport in a whole new dimension. The game's addictive nature lures you in with a “one more go” appeal.
Despite a slight stumble with the single-player mode, C-Smash VRS offers an impressive multiplayer experience coupled with stunning visuals and an engaging soundtrack. The game is a charming mix of simplicity and fun, providing a light workout, and best of all, it comes at a lower price point.
In summary, C-Smash VRS feels like the beautiful realization of a two-decade-old idea, loaded with immersive haptic feedback and room-scale movements. Even though we highly recommend playing in room-scale settings, it still offers an enjoyable and addictive gaming experience for all.
That's it for our review of C-Smash VRS. Stay tuned to our channel for more gaming content, and until next time, keep your game strong!
