Master Detective Archives: Rain Code - Game Review

Hello, my friends and fellow gamers, and welcome to another episode on the "Veteran Game" channel. Today, we're diving deep into the neon-lit universe of "Master Detective Archives: Rain Code" by the celebrated creator Kazutaka Kodaka, renowned for his role in crafting the Danganronpa series.

"Rain Code" stands as a testament to Kodaka's imaginative prowess, marrying elements from investigative adventures of Ace Attorney with mystery mazes reminiscent of Persona. All of this is channeled through the familiar stylistic framework that Danganronpa fans have come to adore. But does it live up to the expectations it naturally invites?

From the get-go, the game demonstrates a masterful execution of setting and characters. You're dropped into the world as an amnesiac detective, Yuma Kokohead, swiftly ushered onto a train towards the rain-soaked dystopian city of Kanai Ward - a city removed from governmental oversight, operated by the enigmatic Amaterasu Corporation.

The vibrant character work here is truly distinctive, carrying Kodaka's unmistakable flair. Each character springs to life with unique names that echo their abilities or personality traits. Be it the villainous Peacekeeper's head, Yomi Hellsmile, or the hotheaded trickster, Desuhiko Thunderbolt, every character contributes to a riveting ensemble that leaves a lasting impression.

The core of "Rain Code" is a murder mystery, thrusting Yuma and his assistant Shinigami into a series of baffling crime scenes. Throughout these investigations, clues become keys to unlocking the labyrinthine truths behind the murders. Yet, amidst these intricate narratives, the game fails to explore more deeply the themes it teases - justice, corruption, power dynamics - leaving an unfulfilled potential that's hard to ignore.

The city of Kanai Ward presents a sprawling world to explore, yet the engagement within it remains disappointingly limited. The abundance of repetitive fetch quests offers little more than accumulating detective points that, in my experience, barely played a role in the core gameplay.

Beyond the character interaction, the narrative falters. The game teases a broader discussion about justice against a backdrop of corporate corruption and inequality. It presents the struggle between the power-driven ruling class and the oppressed, but unfortunately, it stops short of delving into these thought-provoking subjects. We're left with fleeting philosophical ponderings and hints at social critique without a concrete exploration of the concepts.

Certain quirks start to wear thin, such as the investigations that tend to drag on towards the end, morphing into tedious searches for that elusive final clue. Also, the technical glitches, like the blurred vision when playing on the Nintendo Switch undocked, certainly don't help.

Despite these shortcomings, as a fan of Danganronpa, I must admit I found my time in Kanai Ward enjoyable. The rich cast of characters and the unique setting hold an undeniable charm. While the game might not attract new audiences to Kodaka's work, it will surely resonate with his existing fanbase. And given Kodaka's track record, I have no doubt that we'll be seeing more of this intriguing world - especially with planned DLC releases on the horizon.

To wrap it up, "Master Detective Archives: Rain Code" is a promising addition to Kodaka's repertoire, albeit with a few missed opportunities. But, if you're a Danganronpa fan looking to immerse yourself in an exciting, if somewhat flawed, mystery game, you won't be disappointed.

As always, thank you for joining me in this review. Keep gaming, and stay tuned for more reviews on the "Veteran Game" channel. And to the cosplay TikTok community out there - it seems you've found your latest obsession.
