Ghosts' N Goblins (NES) - (2 Loops | 1cc | Longplay)
Hey again, two uploads in a day! This time it's the most infamous capcom title that's remembered for it's brutal Difficulty, Ghosts' N Goblins. Since resurrection came out a few years ago, I figured why not tackle the original games first before trying out resurrection.
My first exposure to GnG was Ultimate on the PSP, the rest such as GnG, Ghouls' N Ghosts and Super Ghouls' N Ghosts was from a compilation on the PSP called Capcom Classics Reloaded. I mostly had fond memories with ultimate, never bothered with the originals because again, the difficulty.
Why did I pick the NES version? After watching an uber helpful guide and a speedrun trick, I figured why not give it a shot. Second reason is because the NES version has certain buffs that the Famicom version lacks. Most notably, the knifes flying way faster.
Anyways, the game was most remembered by fans due to it's brutal difficulty, not many people have gotten past level 1 either thanks to a certain flying enemy. 2nd issue is you can only take to hits, 1st hit you lose armor, 2nd you lose your skin and are reduced to a pile of bones.
The games developer, Tokuro Fujiwara, also did a very funny move by making the game even harder whenever players would find exploits in the game, though to my knowledge that's the arcade release because the home ports was done by Micronics and not Capcom.
On to the game then, I have no say for the arcade version really, both play identically except for the difficulty. Both are hard but the NES version is just a little bit more easier really, plus it has infinite continues.
Anyways, you're main weapon at the start is the Lance which is okay but it's not as fast. The torch has limited range and only allows you to throw two at a time until or until one of them dies out. Axe is...even worse than the torch. Then of course the best weapon, the knife. Why is the knife the best weapon? It's fast and you can barrage enemies with it. Last is the shield WHICH YOU HAVE TO PICK UP at level 6 or it sends you back to level 5 and I guarantee you, you do NOT want to go back to the 2 worst levels in the game.
Movement is pretty straightforward except for jumping, when you jump you have to commit to it since you can't change it midair, thankfully there's not much platforming going on for this game, well nothing too hard really.
Stages 1-4 are pretty alright for the most part until you reach stage 5 where it bombards you with Woody Pigs and Blue Killers. Thanks to a very useful skip, you can go through the stage with ease, it even cancels out the Goblin near the ladders so all you have to do afterwards is take out Satan. The same skip can also be done in stage 6 but it requires some proper timing or the Red Arremer's will get you.
Once take out the two Satan's, you then fight Astaroth and then the game tells you the room was just an Illusion and you have to go through all the stages again, fun right? Anyways, the only real threat in this game is the Red Arremer's since they always stay up in the air and you're only chance to strike is if they swoop down or walk towards you.
The 2nd loop isn't all to hard really, the enemies just move faster and the Red Arremer's now shoot two projectiles at you. Once you finally beat Astaroth for real, Congraturation, the story is happy end.
GnG is hard to recommend due to it's difficulty, 2 hits and you're gone and the rather stiff controls make dodging enemies hard.
The music on the other hand is pretty catchy, especially stage 1. Why? For it's spooky theme and because not many players even saw past the first level. If you're looking for some genuine challenge, then Capcom's Ghosts' N Goblins is just for you. I highly recommend you stick to the NES version because it's just mildly easier and you get infinite continues.
Big thanks to two people really,
First is @UCanBeatVideoGames for their very helpful guide on how you can skip the Red Arremer's and the armor locations!
Seconds is @Laxxus1, it's mostly thanks to their speedrun for showing the skip you can do in stage 5 and 6 that made this 1cc possible!
If you like my runs be sure to check out the group I'm in if you want to see us play more good ol fashion retro games!
